Overview

AirDNA is the leading analytics platform for the short-term rental industry, providing market intelligence across 10M+ listings in 120K global markets.

I joined as a Senior Product Designer and grew into a Staff / Lead Product Designer role, eventually leading design across multiple core product surfaces — hiring designers, coordinating freelancers, and shaping design workflows across the organization.

The core challenge: making massive amounts of rental market data legible, trustworthy, and actionable for fundamentally different users making fundamentally different decisions.

02Forecasting & Pacing

AirDNA’s forecasting tools had the data but not the clarity. Over six months, we redesigned the forecasting suite — Pacing Insights, Reviews & Policy Analysis, and Demand & Event Impact — so managers could read pacing, policy, and demand signals in a single glance. The Events overlay was a core addition: event markers pin to the pacing chart, so managers could see exactly how a marathon, festival, or conference would shift occupancy — and act before the market caught up.

Pacing Insights

Managers opened the app first thing in the morning with one question — is this week pacing above or below where we expected, and what’s about to change it?

Pacing Insights overlays market and historical baselines onto the booking curve. When a marathon, festival, or conference enters the window, managers see the projected uplift on their occupancy — and can price or restrict before the market catches up.

Reviews & Policy Analysis

AirDNA Reviews and Policy Analysis dashboard showing a property's current rating of 4.88, total reviews, response rate, and a bar chart comparing review categories against the market median.

Reviews and policy signals were scattered across several different tools for property managers. We consolidated them into one comparative view, so managers could see how their ratings and policies stacked up against the market — and trace which policy changes were moving the needle.

Revenue Benchmarks

AirDNA Revenue Benchmarks dashboard showing a Performance vs. Last Year chart with comp set, market, and property revenue plotted weekly against last year's pace using patterned bars.

Tracking revenue in isolation was meaningless — managers needed context. The dashboard plotted their property’s weekly revenue against comp set and market averages, with a YoY toggle that brought last year’s pace into the same view. When the patterned bars from last year sat higher than this year’s solids, managers knew exactly where to dig in.

03Across the Platform

An investor wants to know whether a market is worth buying into. An agent wants to know what a single address can earn. A property manager wants to know which ten listings they’re really competing with. A host wants to know if they’re pricing it right. Four different questions, one underlying dataset.

Each of the five surfaces in this section answers one of those questions — but all of them inherit the same chart grammar, type system, and color pass as the forecasting suite. Moving between them should feel like navigating one product, not five, even though every surface was built for a different user and a different level of urgency.

Market Overview

AirDNA’s primary research surface for sizing up a rental market. Aggregates market-level metrics with drill-down into the specific listings that are driving performance.

Built for the research moment before a decision — when an investor needs to form a defensible thesis about a market in under ten minutes without feeling like they’ve missed something.

Rentalizer

The primary entry point into AirDNA — a single-address revenue estimator designed to help users evaluate a property’s potential in seconds.

Balances simplicity with credibility through comps, distribution data, and confidence indicators.

Performance Analytics

A daily decision surface for property managers. Rates, demand, and revenue benchmarked against live market signals, updated daily.

Built so managers can see where they stand in a single read — and know whether today’s question is about pricing, timing, or availability.

Host Tools

A pricing surface for individual hosts. Curate a comp set per listing, then track every competitor's nightly rates, bookings, and restrictions side-by-side with your own.

Before this, hosts were stitching that research together by hand — a browser tab here, a spreadsheet there, a fair amount of guesswork. We built the calendar to replace that patchwork.

Custom Comps

A comp-set builder for when the market is the wrong unit of analysis. Users hand-pick the listings they compete with — by geography, property type, or amenity — and benchmark against that precise set instead of the whole market.

Works the same way for a host tuning prices against three neighbors, a manager benchmarking a portfolio, or an investor sizing up a micro-market. The comp set is the input to everything downstream.

04Designing the Entry Point

Rentalizer is AirDNA’s front door. It’s the first surface most future customers touch — a free revenue estimator that decides, in under a minute, whether the product is worth signing up for.

Most of the work here was shaped by experimentation. We gave away full estimates to earn trust, gated the comp-level depth that analysts actually pay for, and tested how the upgrade moment was framed more than any other surface in the product.

02THE ASK
The ask, at the moment of convictionThe upgrade CTA lands next to the estimate — the moment the number feels real. Placement and framing were the most-tested variables across the funnel.
03EDIT COMPS
See for free. Edit for pay.Every property gets a full auto-curated comp set. Swapping in better matches — the lever that moves the estimate most — is where we drew the paid line.
05Scaling Design

Following a company restructure that reduced the design team from five to two, the scope of the role shifted significantly. What had been shared across a team — research, product design, freelance coordination, and design operations — consolidated into a much smaller function covering five product surfaces simultaneously.

Rebuilding meant hiring, standing up structured research practices, and introducing operational workflows that hadn’t existed before — while maintaining design quality across every surface in parallel.

Freelance CoordinationManaged freelance designers across concurrent workstreams and product initiatives.
Design OperationsIntroduced AI-assisted design workflows and evaluated an AI research platform — working directly with the founder to validate fit, then leading rollout across design, product, and marketing.
ScopeMaintained design quality across Market Overview, Rentalizer, Host Tools, pricing redesign, and the vacation-rental manager bundle — simultaneously.
